In an effort to future-proof the Filipino workforce, the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) – Education Committee, in collaboration with Asia Pacific College (APC), hosted a two-day education conference-workshop centered on the theme “Building a Stronger Workforce èƵ Structured Internship and Lifelong Learning Legislation.” Held on April 10 and 11, 2025, at the APC Multi-Purpose Hall in Makati City, the event convened education leaders, industry experts, and policymakers to align academic learning with real-world skills and continuous professional development. SPUP delegation comprised of Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC (President), Dr. Allan Peejay Lappay (Director, Alumni, External Relations and Advocacies), and Mr. Carlos Babaran, MIT (Head, Information and Communications Technology).
The Education, Learning, and Development (ELD) track featured robust discussions on implementing structured internships across learning institutions on April 10, 2025. Experts including Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC (President, St. Paul University Philippines & Co-Vice Chair, MAP Higher Education), Engr. Sergio Ramos III (CEO, PCI Innovations & Co-Vice Chair, MAP Basic Education) and Dr. Bert Tuga (President, Philippine Normal University & Co-Vice Chair, MAP Teacher Education) emphasized that internships should move beyond fulfilling academic requirements and instead serve as transformative learning experiences. In her presentation, Sr. Merceditas explained that “at the heart of SPUP internship model is a strategic convergence between the University and Industry, promoting robust synergy across four foundational pillars: program, process, project, and person.” She also presented SPUP’s Entrepreneurship and Employment Center (EEC) responsible for facilitating meaningful internship for students and in enhancing employability of graduates. The group, moderated by Sr. Merceditas, also discussed relevant processes and outcomes along student internship program.
On April 11, 2025, the focus shifted to lifelong learning legislation. The ELD panel brought together Dr. Cynthia Rose Bautista (Advisory Member, EDCOM II), Dr. Celia Ilanan (Director, PNU College of Alternative and Lifelong Learning), and Dr. Allan Peejay Lappay (Director, SPUP Alumni, External Relations and Advocacies). The session emphasized the urgent need for systemic support for lifelong learning, recognition of informal learning, and accessible, flexible learning pathways. In presenting SPUP’s lifelong learning innovation, Dr. Lappay highlighted that “lifelong learning is deeply embedded in the University’s Vision-Mission. It is not just a principle but a core graduate attribute.” He introduced the Center for Adult Learning and Continuing Professional Education (CALCPE) as SPUP’s response to the growing demand for lifelong learning, ensuring the development of a highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce, and promoting career mobility, professional enhancement, and personal enrichment.
The workshop culminated in a synthesis of outputs as bases for formal policy recommendations on both structured internship and lifelong learning. Aside from Education, Learning and Development track, proposed actions are also derived from the group workshop sessions of Agriculture/Natural Resources, Financial Services/IT/BPM, Health and Wellness, and Manufacturing/Trade/Tourism. The recommendations aim to contribute to national legislation and institutional reforms. Dr. Federico Macaranas (Chair, MAP Education Committee), committed to consolidating these insights into actionable proposals. As a key stakeholder, MAP will play a vital role in engaging government agencies, the private sector, and academic institutions to advocate for and implement these reforms. The initiative underscores MAP’s vision of building a resilient, agile, and inclusive workforce èƵ education that adapts to the evolving demands of the 21st-century economy.
