The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCHRD) celebrated its 43rd anniversary on March 17, 2025, in Pasay City. The event, themed “Building a Healthier and Wealthier Future: Advancing Research Utilization for Greater Impact,” underscored the pivotal role of health research in enhancing public health initiatives and contributing to the nation’s prosperity. Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa (Secretary, Department of Health) delivered the keynote address, sharing insights on leveraging research utilization to promote public health alongside sustainable economic growth.
A highlight of the celebration was the recognition of accredited Research Ethics Committees (RECs), including the St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP) Ethics Review Committee. These committees play a crucial role in ensuring the ethical conduct of research involving human participants, safeguarding their rights and welfare, and upholding the integrity of the research process.
The Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB), in collaboration with DOST-PCHRD, oversees the accreditation of these committees. PHREB sets standards and procedures for the establishment and management of RECs, ensuring that research practices adhere to ethical guidelines.
The accreditation of the SPUP Ethics Review Committee signifies its compliance with these rigorous standards, reflecting its commitment to ethical research practices. The recognition of accredited RECs like SPUP’s aligns with DOST-PCHRD’s mission to promote ethical research that addresses the health needs of the Filipino population. By ensuring that research is conducted responsibly and ethically, these committees contribute to building a healthier and wealthier future for the nation.
