As a Catholic community, we are called to live in solidarity. Solidarity requires that we learn from, and about our families in Christ. We invite you to explore the following resources to deepen your understanding of the contributions of Black Canadians both past and present.<br><br><strong>Why a Black History Month?</strong><br><br>&quot;The celebration of Black History Month is an attempt to have the achievements of Black people recognized and told. We need a Black History Month in order to help us to arrive at an understanding of ourselves as Canadians in the most accurate and complete socio-historical context that we can produce. As a nation with such diversity, all histories need to be known, all voices need to be expressed. Black history provides the binary opposite to all traditional histories. One needs traditional history to engender a common culture; one needs Black history to engender a clearer and more complete culture” (Excerpt from Rosemary Sadlier in Why a Black History Month).<br><br><strong>Black History Month 2024 Theme&#58; Sustaining Black Joy Through Responding to the Enduring Call to Love</strong><br><br>Every February, people across Canada participate in Black History Month events and celebrations that honour the legacy of Black people in Canada and their communities. We are&#160; called To Love, is the 2024 theme for Catholic Education Week. With this in mind, the work of bell hooks on “Love As a Practice of Freedom” has been intentionally woven into this year's Black History Month theme of Sustaining Black Joy Through Responding to the Enduring Call to Love. It is love that underpins all that we do as a Catholic community and as bell hooks reminds us, “the moment we choose to love we begin to move towards freedom, to act in ways that liberate ourselves and others. That action is the testimony of love as the practice of freedom.” As such, the events planned for this month are rooted in the practice of love. Black History as a celebration must always be anchored in love, for what is a celebration if it is not first grounded in love? We invite educators to lead students in February through an intentional celebration of the rich history, contributions and achievements of Black communities and encourage educators to continue to share this learning year round. As the Honourable Jean Augustine stated, &quot;if we are to build a kind of society that's fair and just and equitable and inclusive, I must know your story, just as you must know my story.&quot; Educators are invited to access all workshops and read alouds in addition to school wide planning as a way to engage in celebrations this month to learn about and highlight the stories, contributions and achievements of members from the Black community that are centered in Love.<br><br>As February approaches the Equity Department is pleased to offer a resource for Black History Month and Beyond that uplifts all èƵprogramming for February 2024 inclusive of events planned through the Equity Department, resources available on the Equity SharePoint and local events for Black History Month and beyond. The EQAO assessments and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) provide an indication of each student’s achievement in reading, writing and/or mathematics at key points throughout their formal schooling. The 2022-2023 assessments represent the second EQAO assessments administered since 2018-2019 and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic disruption to learning. <br><br>The assessment results for elementary students report on reading, writing and mathematics at both the primary (Grade 3) and junior (Grade 6) levels of study. The Grade 9 EQAO assessment focuses on mathematics achievement, while the OSSLT assesses Grade 10 students’ proficiency in reading and writing. Successful completion of this test (or the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course) is one of the 32 requirements necessary to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).<br><br>The elementary EQAO assessment results for the èƵ(DPCDSB) continue to indicate high performance in terms of proportions of students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard (Levels 3 or 4) on the Grades 3 and 6 assessments of reading and writing.<br><br>Reading results show 77% of students in Grade 3 met or exceeded the standard, while 87% of students in Grade 6 achieved Level 3 or 4.<br><br>In writing, 70% of Grade 3 students and 88% of Grade 6 students met or exceeded the standard.<br><br>Success rates on the 2022-2023 OSSLT for èƵstudents continue to be very high, with 86% of students writing in Grade 10 successful on the OSSLT. In Grade 3, 60% of students achieved the provincial standard in mathematics, while 48% of Grade 6 students also achieved Level 3 or 4 in mathematics.&#160; <br><br>At the secondary level, the 2022-2023 EQAO assessment results for Grade 9 mathematics remained stable in èƵat 54% of students achieving the provincial standard.&#160; <br><br>While èƵstudents have demonstrated improvement in mathematics achievement compared to 2021-2022, èƵcontinues to dedicate a wide range of supports to schools to focus on improving learning in this key subject area for all students.<br><br>èƵresults are encouraging, particularly in the areas of reading and writing where students continued to achieve at or above the provincial average,” said Marianne Mazzorato, Director of Education. “èƵresults in mathematics are mostly in alignment with provincial averages, however, we know we have work to do and are committed to developing and putting into place, the supports necessary to help our students achieve success.”<br><br>The 2022-2023 results for èƵstudents and the province (ON) in all six elementary EQAO assessments, the Grade 9 mathematics assessments, and the OSSLT are presented below.&#160;</p><table cellspacing="0" width="100%" class="ms-rteTable-default"><tbody><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default" style="width&#58;33.3333%;"><strong>Assessment</strong></td><td class="ms-rteTable-default" style="width&#58;33.3333%;"><strong>DP</strong></td><td class="ms-rteTable-default" style="width&#58;33.3333%;"><strong>ON</strong></td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Primary Reading</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">77%</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">73%</td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Primary Writing</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">70%</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">65%</td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Primary Mathematics</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">60%</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">60%</td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Junior Reading</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">87%</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">84%</td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Junior Writing</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">88%</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">84%</td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Junior Mathematics</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">48%</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">50%</td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Grade 9&#160;Mathematics</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">54%</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">54%</td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">OSSLT (First-Time Eligible)</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">86%</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">85%</td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">OSSLT (Previously Eligible)</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">62%</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">63%</td></tr></tbody></table><br>As in past years, èƵstaff will undertake a detailed analysis of the EQAO and OSSLT results to provide support to schools, students and parents/guardians to ensure that more students continue to improve in all assessment areas.
